linda marie macdonald. good afternoon, everyone. i'm sydnie kohara. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. 21 hours and some serious cash. >> president obama speaking in reno right now. these are live pictures. he was here and he was gone. but not before wrapping up a whirlwind trip to the bay area. his short stay here included a breakfast of champions at the saint regis hotel. anne makovec tells us some people had a very special message for the president. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. the message set to song, you guys. but the strip really all about raising money. and we haven't gotten official totals but we are told he raised about $4 million for both his campaign and the democratic national committee in the short trip to california. musical revue that interrupted president obama this morning as he spoke inside the saint regis hotel in san francisco. >> i bought the maximum tickets to the breakfast as did my boyfriend and we had 21 seats. and we sang the president a song about bradley manning. >> reporter: manning has been in jail on suspicion of leaking info to wikileaks. and this woman says she spent almost $77,000 only to be escorted out by the secret service. what was it like? >> uhm, pretty fun. you know, i have been in trouble before, for all the right reasons, of course. >> reporter: the breakfast cost between $5,000 and $35,000 per plate. the neighborhood was on lockdown as people lined the streets. >> because he is the president, he is inspirational and i haven't had the opportunity to see him so i said, why not? >> i think he is not doing a great job. i voted for him, and he is not delivering. >> reporter: obama left for reno this morning from san

francisco international airport and will end the night in l.a. last night he was at the masonic auditorium on nob hill, 2500 people paid between $25 and $10,000 each. then it was off to dine in presidio heights, where 60 supporters paid more than $35,000 each. everyone hoping to make contact with the commander-in-chief. do you think he is listening to your message. probably not. [ singing ] >> look at the republicans, what else can we do ♪ >> reporter: now, president obama seemed to take that whole musical performance in stride. he thanked the group for their performance and even complimented them on their voices. anne makovec, cbs 5. thank you. and president obama kicking off his bay area visit yesterday with a town hall meeting at facebook. he talked about reducing the deficit in part by raising

taxes on the wealthy. >> and then what we have said is let's take another trillion of that, that allows people like me and, frankly, you, mark, for paying a little more in taxes. [ light chuckles ] >> i know you're okay with that. >> in case you didn't catch that, billionaire ceo mark zuckerberg telling the president, yeah, he's cool with that plan. >> but are you ready for this? $6 a gallon for gas? one economist says it could happen this summer. you can blame the weakening dollar pushing up commodity prices including oil. and aid busy hurricane season, instability in the middle east and $6 or higher gas prices would not be out of question. right now caltrain officials are at a special session hoping to stage service for customers. -- hoping to save service for customers. they hope to keep trains running for a year. they considered closing three stations and cutting 10 trains due to a $30 million budget

deficit. it has not released any official details of the new plan but it's expected to approve higher fares and parking fees. want to know where to find a parking place in san francisco? well, there is an app for that. starting today drivers can get realtime information in several neighborhoods. this is how it works. sensors detect where a space opens. drivers can check availability and meter rates by logging on to sfparks.org or using a new smart phone app. and later this year, drivers will be able to pay meters by phone or online. you can get a text message before it runs out. a clean-up project will affect traffic on 280 in san jose today. caltrans has closed two southbound lanes and the north and south connector ramp to 87 while crews remove graffiti on the bird avenue train overpass. there are signs up to help you get around this detour. work is expected to wrap up about 2:30 this afternoon. so in just a few hours.

iphone and ipad users out there, beware. >> that's right. your device knows your every move secretly tracking what you are doing and storing that information. kendis gibson on a case of i spy. >> reporter: it's alarming news to the millions of users of apple iphones and ipads. your mobile device may be spying on your whereabouts. >> i think it's invasive. it's very invasive especially since we didn't know about it as a user. you should know and have a choice. have a choice to opt out of that kind of thing. >> reporter: british researchers found iphones and 3-g tracked everywhere the user goes. it stores the longitude, latitude and time stamp and that information gets duplicated on a computer every time it's synchronized. >> ver intrusive. i don't want anybody to know where i'm going all the time especially a boyfriend, eesh!

today crews are starti the toxic walls are coming down at a mountain view landmark. today crews are starting to dismantle the panels off hangar 1. they are going to restore it. removing the toxic pcbs in the site is a major step in the preservation project. a break in a string of sex crimes in oakland. police are questioning a man they say matches the suspect description in several assaults near lake merritt. the most recent case two days

ago when a man followed a woman into her home and forced her to undress. so far no arrests. fbi investigating a link between a pipe bomb inside a colorado mall and the 12th anniversary of the columbine shooting yesterday. officers found a pipe bomb in propane tanks nearby after a fire broke out near the food court. fbi agents are searching for a month considered a person of interest in the case. the mall is located near the school where 13 people were killed and the shooters killed themselves 12 years ago. today an aid ship transported the bodies two of journalists killed in libya. tim hetherington and photographer chris hondros were covering the battle between rebel and government forces in misrata. the city is under weeks of relentless shelling by government troops. beyond the front lines, hetherington earned an oscar nomination for directing

promise rapid weight loss with little exercise. it might seem like a dream come true, diet pills that promise rapid weight loss with little exercise. in many cases the only thing that gets thinner is your wallet. we have a diet scam crackdown. >> reporter: the federal trade commission just announced a crackdown on websites that use the logos of real news organizations and fake testimonials to push a dietary sum elementary. they are not the only diet scam out there. with the nation's high obesity rate coupled with the easy net

access weight is an area ripe for scammers and you don't always get what you see. >> it allows people to cloak their scamming products in -- with legitimate looking items things like logos and people they might have seen before, with formats that look like they are legitimate news formats. >> reporter: claims like these should be a warning sign. lose weight without diet other exercise, lose 30 pounds in 30 days. or eat your favorite foods and still lose weight. the only thing you're likely to lose with many of these so- called quick fixes, the ftc says, is your money. >> it's very common for people who are marketing weight loss products to try to pitch them as being quick and easy ways to lose weight. we have been seeing that for years and years and years. >> reporter: when it comes to weight loss the only person with a legitimate claim for you is probably your doctor and if you think you have been scammed, report it to the ftc. for consumerwatch, i'm karen kay fa. >> while you're learning about diet scams, we are learning

about how to work hard. >> boy, what a difference a couple of hours makes this morning. this morning it was raining. >> was it raining? i thought i slept through that this morning. >> most of us did. >> but now beautiful sunshine. >> now it's looking nice. we have some partly cloudy skies up there rate now. and looks like the has come to an end. yes, it was raining early on but now the wind is blowing and the rain has come to an end. the cold front is kicking eastward leaving behind a couple of clouds but lots of sunshine in between. so looking good over san jose and how about this? over the city of san francisco, coit tower looking good as it looks like we're in for a nice afternoon. partly cloudy skies. we'll keep a couple of clouds especially over the mountaintops and it's going to be breezy especially along the coastline and it looks like inside the bay. tonight, you could very well see a couple of patches of fog developing in some of the interior valleys, overnight lows mainly into the 40s. this cold front not impressive but strong enough for showers and now heading eastward.

the showers have ended. we'll catch a break and see high pressure building in for a day. behind that, though, here your weekend. we have more clouds out there and we're hoping most of that stays to the north of us. i think we'll see some clouds but yeah, there is a slight chance of showers to the north. temperatures are going to be running to 67 degrees in san jose today. before 6 milpitas. about -- about 66 milpitas, 65 morgan hill. east bay into the 60s everywhere. nice weather out there just a couple of clouds over the mountaintops. in the north bay, cool breezes out toward the coastline keeping those temperatures mainly into the 50s right out at the immediate water's edge. otherwise you got lots of 60s showing up inland. so as we look out over the next couple of days, tomorrow looking pretty good as we are going to see just some partly cloudy skies. over the weekend clouds thickening up. again the storm system going to brush to the north of us but enough passing clouds that we could squeeze out a couple of light showers to the north. by monday, tuesday and wednesday, looks like high pressure builds back into the bay area and that temperatures warming up. how about easter sunday? motionly cloudy skies right now

-- mostly cloudy skies right now temperatures in the 50s and 60s. that's the latest forecast. back to you. >> lawrence, we'll take it. thank you. thousands of young people in san francisco are discovering that creating murals can make a big difference not just in their own lives but in their neighborhoods, as well. sharon chin introduces us to the man behind the murals. reporter: teacher holly friel shows how muralist josef norris took a graffiti-laced wall at ida b. wells continuation high school and transformed it into a block- long masterpiece with 150 students over three years. >> what i love about these murals is that you have all these kind of buried jewels. >> it's a big blank wall with a few tags all the time. and now it's a beautiful work of art. >> what we had here was something special. >> reporter: josef is founder and director of kid serve a nonprofit that creates murals with san francisco students from preschool to high school. >> usually an aha moment, where

we start laying tile on a blank wall and after a few weeks, the young artists kind of get it, that they're really transforming their city. >> reporter: josef helps students create sections of the mural to illustrate their class lessons an women's history, sports pioneers and music. >> we worked on this during art class. >> reporter: 18-year-old arrgitu osman designed a tile on muhammad ali. she says the mural brought the curriculum to life. >> it makes learning about history more fun and appealing for kids my age. >> reporter: this classmate julie zhu enjoys it when her family drives by the mural. >> it's kind of like a sense of pride because you get to, you know, contribute to something like that. >> reporter: over the last 12 years, josef has helped thousands of kids create about 100 plurals all over san francisco, all outside, all permanent. josef started kid serve in 1998 after taking a job creating a mural with schoolchildren. armed with grants and donations he worked with many children in high risk neighborhoods.

>> these project really are about kids being able to do something very visual, public, permanent out in their neighborhoods and being able to say in a positive way, we're part of this city and we matter. >> reporter: principal jean robertson can't thank josef enough for multiple murals on the walls of grattan elementary. >> the fact that he can come in and roll out his program completely with the teachers, so collaborative, they do everything together and it runs like a machine. >> reporter: fifth grader steven saks just smiles. >> just gives me a really happy feeling. >> i'm hoping that these projects plant a seed that it gives them ideas of how they can make a difference. >> reporter: for helping thousands of young people serve their communities community through public and the, this week's jefferson award in the bay area goes to josef norris. sharon chin, cbs 5. >> absolutely beautiful. >> they are. they're stunning and the kids enjoy them, as well. bargain hunting with an 18-
